Cemetery Website SEO Guide

SEO for Cemetery Websites: Making Sure Your Cemetery Is Found

Cemetery SEO is easier than almost any other sector. Your competitors are a handful of local grounds, most with sites built in 2011 and never touched since. A few weeks of deliberate work puts you at the top.

What follows is the order we work in when we take on a cemetery website, whether the client sits in Queensland, Yorkshire or Ohio.

Start with your Google Business Profile

For local searches this outranks your website in visibility. Claim the listing, then fill every field.

  • Exact opening hours, including seasonal changes and holiday closures
  • The correct entrance pinned on the map, not the centre of the grounds
  • Category set to Cemetery, with Funeral Home added only if you offer those services
  • Ten or more current photographs, taken on a clear day
  • A link to your grave search, not only your homepage

Answer questions in the Q&A section yourself. If you leave it, strangers answer for you and get things wrong.

Give every location its own page

Councils and trusts that manage four cemeteries under one authority usually list all four on a single page. Each one deserves its own URL with its own name, address, hours, section map and history. Search engines match a page to a place, and a shared page matches none of them well.

Local searches are specific. Your town, your name, your grounds.

Write the page titles for how people search

Nobody types "welcome to our website". They type the cemetery name plus a town, or a task plus a place.

Keep titles under sixty characters where you can, and put the distinguishing words first.

Your burial records are your biggest SEO asset

A searchable register creates pages that match name searches nobody else can serve. Someone hunting for a great grandmother types a full name into Google. If your site holds that name on a crawlable page, you get a visitor no keyword research would have predicted.

Two conditions apply. The records need to be readable by a crawler rather than locked inside a search widget that generates nothing indexable. And each record or section needs a stable URL.

Talk to your developer about this before you build. Retrofitting is expensive.

Add structured data

Mark up your organisation details, opening hours and address so search engines read them without guessing. The Cemetery type exists in schema.org and takes ten minutes to implement. This is the single cheapest technical win available to you.

Answer the questions your office already answers

Log the questions that come in by phone for two weeks. Those questions are your content plan. Common ones across every cemetery we work with:

  • Can I be buried with my husband in an existing plot
  • What memorials are allowed in each section
  • What does a plot cost and what does the price include
  • Can we scatter ashes on the grounds
  • Who maintains the grave after burial
  • How do I transfer interment rights

One page each, written plainly, 400 to 700 words. These rank fast because so few cemeteries bother.

Earn links locally

Forget national link building. Aim at the historical society, the genealogy group, the parish or council directory, the war graves organisation, the local newspaper. Publishing the history of your grounds and profiles of notable burials gives these organisations a reason to link, and their links carry weight for local searches.

Fix speed and mobile before anything clever

Compress the images, remove the plugins nobody uses, choose hosting in the country your visitors live in. Google measures loading performance from real mobile visits, and your audience is on phones with older handsets.

A realistic timeline

Business Profile improvements show within two weeks. Page titles and structured data show within a month. Question pages take two to three months to settle. Burial record pages accumulate traffic for years without further work.
